Bukchon Hanok Village: 600-Year-Old Traditional Korean Neighborhood

북촌한옥마을

Introduction

Nestled between Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung, Bukchon is a dense urban neighborhood of 900+ beautifully preserved traditional Korean hanok houses.

Bukchon Hanok Village is one of the few remaining historic residential districts in Seoul where traditional hanok architecture has survived into the modern era. The village dates to the Joseon dynasty and once housed high-ranking government officials. Today it is a living neighborhood — residents still call it home — making it both a cultural landmark and a functional community. The famous Gahoe-dong alley offers the most photogenic view of tiled rooftops against the Seoul cityscape.

  • Iconic hilltop alley views over Seoul's rooftops
